ABOUT JONATHAN

Mr Jonathan Bell is a Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon

I have been a knee specialist for over 20 years. My approach is to have a philosophy of keeping the active active and through that means that I have helped thousands of children, teens and adults return to sports and hobbies after injury, painful and degenerative conditions.

I’m very experienced in managing ligament reconstructions, arthroscopic techniques, patellar femoral stabilisation surgery, and joint replacements. I believe that many patients can be managed without surgery and will always explore nonoperative options with my patients. My passion for helping those wishing to return to sport extends to me taking my own patients skiing after surgery.

The majority of my patients come from recommendations from former patients or physiotherapists who have experience of treating my patients either with or without surgery. The rest come from other consultants or GP’s. You may see me without a recommendation if you are self funding but if you wish to use insurance ask them to authorise an appointment. I’m recognised by all insurers. My area of specialism is the knee.

The process

How to navigate your way to a return to full fitness

My three simple steps to recovery and what to expect if you want me to help you.

Listen

I am very goal driven. So early on I want to know what you and I are aiming for. What sports you can’t do. The hobbies you are missing out on. What work or travel plans are affected by your problem. Then, together, we will discuss how to get you back to those things you want. The next step is to work out what’s stopping you being active.

Diagnosis

During our first consultation i’ll give you an idea of what’s wrong. At this point scans or xrays are helpful. We’ll discuss how and why your condition is stopping you achieve what you want. We’ll talk about the severity of the problem, why it has occurred and how it will play out if we do nothing, as sometimes things get better on their own. Another important consideration is to help you understand what you can and can’t safely do so you don’t make the problem worse. Then we’ll talk about treatment options.

Treatment

I’ll let you know if by waiting the problem will get better on its own. You may be interested to know what you can do to help yourself. I like to talk through non operating options even if it is to explain why that may not be best. I’m happy to try medicines or injectable treatments before surgery if there’s a reasonable chance it will work. However, if we agree that surgery is best I have over 20 years experience in the operating theatres as a specialist knee surgeon. Before making a decision to go ahead with surgery I’ll go through the risks and benefits, the recovery and what to expect. We can talk about the types of anaesthetic. I’ve worked with my anaesthetist for 2 decades. I have published on pain relief, day case surgery and recovery after surgery.

05

Arthroscopy

Arthroscopy means to look into the joint with a camera. By using arthroscopy, I can carry out ligament surgery, meniscal surgery and treat joint surface problems.

06

Second Opinions

I see a significant number of patients requesting second opinions. Please be aware that these may not be standard “insured” appointments. I’ll try to keep within insurance guidelines for appointment length so you can use your insurance, but they often just take too long to do justice. As many second opinions are spent clearing up poor communication problems i may request that you book a longer self-pay appointment. Ill happily review each case on its merits.

Treating both insured and self-pay private patients

Jonathan is very happy to treat patients who are insured and wish to use their medical insurance to pay their bills but is also quite come happy to see patients who wish to self fund their treatment. At all points he’ll be transparent about the costs involved and that there is never any obligation to proceed with treatment if you felt that it was not affordable or for you. If you’d like to make an enquiry please
book now.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find out what’s wrong and what can be done to help?

One of the first things Jonathan will ask what it is you want as the outcome of treatment. Then it is important to diagnose what problem is between where you are now and where you want to be. This would involve specific questions about your condition, examining you and finding out what treatments you have tried. Scans can be very useful ( and are more informative if done after the first appointment) . By now you should have a clear diagnosis and the severity of the problem. You’ll then discuss what treatments are possible and Jonathan will help you decide which is best for you.

How do I find out if I'm covered by insurance?

If you have insurance you should call them first to check they will approve cover for you to get a diagnosis by Jonathan. Many will these days approve your consultation by talking to one of their own in house team rather than your GP. Mostwill ask that you call them back before having a scan.

What if I don't have insurance?

You can just book an appointment. You don't need a referral letter. If you contact us we will be able to give you a cost. The vast majority of people seen require a first appointment, a scan and a follow up discussion. If you are self funding your treatment Jonathan will then tell you the cost of treatments.

What happens when I have my diagnosis?

Jonathan will then discuss with you non operative treatments and procedures such as injectable or surgical treatments where appropriate. In many cases you may just require physiotherapy. Jonathan can recommend a physiotherapist to you. If you require surgery he will follow you up to ensure that you get the best outcome. He works with your physiotherapist to optimise your recovery and get you “fit to play” regardless of whether you are an elite athlete, just a sports enthusiast, a walker or gardener. The emphasis is on helping you achieve what you want to get back to.
